A2 Media Research Task 8

A2 Media Research Task 8

Choose one trailer that you think successfully fulfils the purpose of a trailer (to capture the audience attention and encourage them to watch the film) and evaluate how it is able to do this.

Iron Man 3

I believe the trailer used to market Iron Man 3, fulfils its purpose of capturing the audience and persuading them to watch to the full movie. One way in which I think the trailer is effective in capturing the audience is by only showing small sections of different action events throughout the film however not showing an outcome to any situations. For example, at one point a shot from the trailer shows a plane appearing to be falling out of the sky leaving a trail of smoke behind it, in the sky is also five normal people dressed in suits of smart clothes, connoting they could be of high status and generally important to something. As the character of Iron Man isn’t seen in this shot, an unsure feeling is created to leave viewers thinking about what happened to the civilians, and potentially asking questions to themselves about what happened to them. I believe this is a very effective way of encouraging audiences to watch the full film as they want to know answers that haven’t been given to them in the trailer. Throughout the trailer, narrative is used from a villains voice made clear by the shots used accordingly, the narrative also asks questions, although not to the audience but to the main character, Iron Man. “Do you want an empty life or a meaningful death” is one of the questions heard addressing Iron Man, this is another technique used by the trailer to leave the audience in suspense as it creates an uncertain storyline before the film is released. Parallel to this, audio is used to create a climatic feeling as the trailer reaches the pinnacle of action and intensity shown. This helps engage the viewer with what they’re watching and will encourage them to see the full film as they’re left on a cliff hanger.

I also think the special effects used in the trailer help Iron Man 3 encourage the audiences to watch the full film. Lots of special effects are advertised throughout the trailer, in my opinion this has a large influence on persuading viewers to visit cinemas. The special effects make the movie exciting for audiences through use of explosions and advanced weapons, this would appeal to many action fans, but it also create the feeling of seeing something new due to the movies unique plot and character, attracting people from outside the action genre interest to watch the full movie as it comes across as so intense and entertaining.

Overall I believe Iron Man 3 successfully fulfils the purpose of a trailer by using a range of components that work effectively with each other to create suspense and engage audiences with the film.

A2 Media Research Task 5

Explore the use of pace in two different trailers. What impact does pacing have on the effectiveness of the trailer?

Taken 3

Taken 3 varies its pace throughout their trailer to help make it as effective as possible on audiences. At the beginning, the shots are relatively quick, although the audio and narrative help create a slow pace during the opening shots. This is effective on the trailer as it allows audiences to settle into it rather than jumping straight into action. The slow pace at the beginning also allows the audiences to gain a brief understanding about the story and characters, for example in the opening 20 seconds of Taken 3 a small family are introduced and informed that everything within their life is currently going well. As the trailer progresses, the pace increases as action is introduced. At one point the trailer shows shots of a murder scene, the pace increases briefly increases to show quick shots of points that producers want the audience to see but not to see too much of them, for example the bloody knife and body on the bed.

Throughout the trailer pace varies dependant on whether the producers want viewers to know important information about the movie or if action is being shown to try and encourage viewers. There are many times in the Taken 3 trailer where information is being shared with viewers, particularly when the main character is being described by federal agents. During these shots the pace is significantly slowed down to enable the audience to listen more rather than focusing on fast shots. However, when there is no information or narrative being and action shots are being shown, the pace speeds up to create a dramatic effect and a bit more tension within the trailer. Overall, the pace used throughout has a positive impact on the effectiveness of the Taken 3 trailer.

Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift

Unlike the Taken 3 trailer, Tokyo Drift uses a much more frequent fast pace throughout. The trailer is representing a street racing film therefore using a much faster pace is appropriate to connote the speed of the cars and also other action taking place between rival characters. I believe the pace has a positive impact on the effectiveness of the trailer as it works well with the action shots used and race cars shown throughout. This attracts viewers to the trailer and encourages them to watch the full film as the trailer releases the impression of a high intensity movie from beginning to end.

Compare and contrast the similarities/differences of the teaser trailer and the full theatrical trailer of two films. Decide which trailer is more effective.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Similarities
Differences
During both trailers there are short periods where the trailers are blacked out as a way to move to the next clip of the trailer.
The teaser trailer begins with a green screen to approve appropriate audiences for the film then showing producers of the film such as 20th Century Fox, where as the final trailer begins straight away with scenes from the movie and shows the producers later on throughout.
Both trailers end the same way blacking out and on screen text appearing saying ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’  In both trailers the same bold font style is also used.
The teaser trailer tends to use quicker camera shots that cut from one to another at fast speeds where as the final trailer uses longer shots throughout with fades as transactions.
Throughout both trailers there is a voice over of characters above the sound used. In the teaser trailer only one human voice is heard however in the final trailer both ape and human voices are heard in different periods.
The final trailer uses a full soundtrack throughout to build up tension and make the shots more dramatic. However the teaser trailer one uses basic sounds that don’t really progress as the trailer plays.

Between both trailers for ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ I believe the final trailer is more effective in attracting an audience to the movie. I think this because the final trailer shows more action and more exciting parts of the movie, it also creates more suspense throughout. From watching the trailers, I was more intrigued as the viewer whilst watching the final trailer rather than a slower version that was used as the teaser trailer.

Skyfall

Similarities
Differences
Both trailers start with the green screen informing audiences that the previews have been approved for viewing.
After the green screen at the beginning, the teaser trailer shows animations of the film producers straight after. Although the final trailer show’s producers of the movie later on.
Both trailers begin with relatively long clips that fade from one to another and then speed up with cuts towards the end.
At the end of the teaser trailer the name of the movie doesn’t appear at any point, at the end ‘007’ is used where as in the final trailer ‘Skyfall’ is used although both titles use the same font.
At the end of both trailers the same font style is used to show the month of the movie’s release.
The final trailer shows much more action clips such as guns and explosions which represent the films action genre. Whereas the teaser trailer shows minimal action shots and doesn’t give away much of the film.

I believe ‘Skyfall’ also composed a more effective final trailer as opposed to their teaser trailer. From watching both trailers, I think the teaser trailer is still effective in attracting attention; however the final trailer was able to show more action and explosions making it more cinematic and a better representative of an action film. Because of this I believe the final trailer was most effective.
