A2 Media Research Task 1

A2 Media Research Task 1

Compare and contrast the similarities/differences of the teaser trailer and the full theatrical trailer of two films. Decide which trailer is more effective.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Similarities
Differences
During both trailers there are short periods where the trailers are blacked out as a way to move to the next clip of the trailer.
The teaser trailer begins with a green screen to approve appropriate audiences for the film then showing producers of the film such as 20th Century Fox, where as the final trailer begins straight away with scenes from the movie and shows the producers later on throughout.
Both trailers end the same way blacking out and on screen text appearing saying ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’  In both trailers the same bold font style is also used.
The teaser trailer tends to use quicker camera shots that cut from one to another at fast speeds where as the final trailer uses longer shots throughout with fades as transactions.
Throughout both trailers there is a voice over of characters above the sound used. In the teaser trailer only one human voice is heard however in the final trailer both ape and human voices are heard in different periods.
The final trailer uses a full soundtrack throughout to build up tension and make the shots more dramatic. However the teaser trailer one uses basic sounds that don’t really progress as the trailer plays.

Between both trailers for ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ I believe the final trailer is more effective in attracting an audience to the movie. I think this because the final trailer shows more action and more exciting parts of the movie, it also creates more suspense throughout. From watching the trailers, I was more intrigued as the viewer whilst watching the final trailer rather than a slower version that was used as the teaser trailer.

Skyfall

Similarities
Differences
Both trailers start with the green screen informing audiences that the previews have been approved for viewing.
After the green screen at the beginning, the teaser trailer shows animations of the film producers straight after. Although the final trailer show’s producers of the movie later on.
Both trailers begin with relatively long clips that fade from one to another and then speed up with cuts towards the end.
At the end of the teaser trailer the name of the movie doesn’t appear at any point, at the end ‘007’ is used where as in the final trailer ‘Skyfall’ is used although both titles use the same font.
At the end of both trailers the same font style is used to show the month of the movie’s release.
The final trailer shows much more action clips such as guns and explosions which represent the films action genre. Whereas the teaser trailer shows minimal action shots and doesn’t give away much of the film.

I believe ‘Skyfall’ also composed a more effective final trailer as opposed to their teaser trailer. From watching both trailers, I think the teaser trailer is still effective in attracting attention; however the final trailer was able to show more action and explosions making it more cinematic and a better representative of an action film. Because of this I believe the final trailer was most effective.
